When I took a parental leave last year following the birth of my son, someone joked to make sure I took it easy. That first year with baby was not the time to make any dramatic changes, namely to quit your job, go back to school, and start a business.
Never one to say no to a challenge, I did all three.
These days I'm making a go of things being a FABM Educator. Its a far cry from how I used to make a living working a 9-5 in the not-for-profit sector. And so far, I'm loving every minute of it!
What is a FABM Educator, you ask? The acronym 'FABM' refers to fertility awareness based methods of family planning and gynecological health monitoring.
I teach women and couples to chart their fertility using the Creighton Model FertilityCare™ System. Charting with Creighton then allows them to monitor their reproductive health and fertility in real-time, and use that information to achieve a pregnancy, avoid a pregnancy, and seek restorative medical treatment for PMS, pelvic pain, abnormal bleeding, infertility, recurrent miscarriage and a whole bunch of other health issues.
This knowledge is so critical to women's health. In fact, it's now widely acknowledged that the menstrual cycle is the fifth vital sign in women's healthcare. Just like body temperature, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate, charting the menstrual cycle helps to assess the general physical health of a person, give clues to possible diseases, and show progress toward recovery.
The advantages of charting with the Creighton Model are numerous. It is safe; unlike contraceptives, there are no known medical side effects associated with its use. It's inexpensive; the cost of FertilityCare services is considerably less than birth control and IUI/IVF. Lastly, it's natural and environmentally friendly! You won't be ingesting any synthetics or needing to buy any one-time use devices. It's good for you, and the planet!
As an adult educator and business owner, life these days looks very different. My schedule is my own and for me, its the perfect balance of getting to work one-on-one with inspiring and curious clients and spending time with my growing family.
I am excited to dive into blogging over here to share more about my journey to become a certified FertilityCare Practitioner (just a few more steps to go!) AND spread the word about all the benefits of cycle charting and body literacy.
